I'm short on time to put together a Favourite Things Friday post, since I have to be back to work in a couple minutes, but I do want to play along this week. I was thinking about the subject last night before bed (*snort*) and whaddaya know, my favorite Mr. Darcy, Matthew Macfadyen popped into my head. Yes, he'll do quite nicely, thank you!
I loved him in Pride & Prejudice.
I have since rented movies I otherwise might not have simply because he's been in them. (Don't you do that?) One that was a total departure from his buttoned up, corset movie character was Daniel in "Death at a Funeral." This is the 2007 version, not the new one (which I haven't seen) starring Chris Rock. Laughed my butt off! Rent it sometime.
He also played a great character in the BBC mini-series, "Little Dorrit," which I caught on PBS earlier this year. Another wonderful role.
I so wanted to post the YouTube of my favorite scene in Pride & Prejudice, the one that melts me to goo every time I see it, but it's one of those that is not able to be embedded. But here is the link. (Click the word "link.") Treat yourself!
There can only be one Mr Darcy for me, and the BBC series was a lot longer than the film so you get more to enjoy.

Pride and Prejudice has always been my favorite book and the PBS version has always been my favorite movie. I never saw the updated one with Kiera and Matthew, but I will and very soon! Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. I think I've been missing something.... I'll have to check this out. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I do watch movies simply because a particular actor is featured. For example Robert Duvall. No he's not pretty like Matthew MacFayden, but his acting skills are superb.
Great pick! I thought that was Mr. Darcy when I saw the preview for your post! I LOVE Pride and Prejudice too- and I turn into a blubbering mess everytime when he calls Elizabeth Mrs. Darcy at the end of the film!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll have to watch it again this weekend-and add some of his other films to my Netflix queue!
I'm with Shevvy on this one, there can and will only be one Mr Darcy, Colin Firth. However Matthew MacFadyen will do very nicely as a bit of eye candy. I have seen the original Death At A Funeral, but haven't seen Little Dorrit, will have to check it out. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHe's a rather nice looking chap isnt he? I wouldn't mind him escorting me about town. Your Matthew Macfadyen thing sounds a bit like my John Cusack obsession.
ReplyDeleteI think you just inspired me to start watching all those old classics ( made recently) on DVD again.
Does your husband know you're thinking of other men that close to sleep time? Hmnnnn?
Thanks for stopping by FTF this week .
Very nice to look at. Yes, I watch movies just because of the actors: Sense and Sensibility, Truly, Madly, Deeply, Love Actually. I watch those because of good ol' Alan Rickman. [Sigh]. Ditto for anything with David Tennant.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this version of P&P. I don't like Kierra Knightly (is there something wrong with her jaw, or is it just me), so I haven't watched it. I like the old BBC version (not sure how old, but it's long).
Funny: my verification word looked like a French spelling of crikey: criquie. Ha!
Ohh, he was lovely as Hareton Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights (Masterpiece Theater 1998). And he cuts a fine Darcy figure (although I have to admit, Darcy is NOT my favorite Austen hero. I like Mr. Knightley from Emma best. Elizabeth Bennet is my favorite heroine, though, becuase she tells Darcy no! Rock on Lizzie!) You picked a good one today.

Great Favourite, P.! :o) I swoon and my thoughts travel to the times of Mr. Darcy. Oh, to be a lady of those times...because surely I would be as outspoken as Elizabeth Bennett. ;o) Thanks for sharing! Happy FTF!
ReplyDeleteYou and my niece!!
ReplyDeleteThe man will go down as one of the most talented and versatile actors of our time. Even his wonderful portrayal in Any Human Heart, a long cry from Darcy leaves the sex kitten image behind and brings out the highly trained professional he is
ReplyDeleteI know this is an older post, but I have to say this. It took me almost a month to see as many of Matthew’s films as possible. And, my God, he never disappoints, does he?
ReplyDeleteRegarding Mr. Darcy, I’ve seen the 1995 BBC series and the 2005 and read everything I could find and, for me, Matthew is the best Darcy. Sorry if that’s not the general opinion, but he managed to portray that vulnerability of Darcy’s better than Colin Firth. And those eyes… got to love those eyes.
But have you seen him in In my father’s den? Heartbreaking… extraordinary performance. I’d love to see him on stage, although I think that will never happen. It’s not like his coming to Romania. Anyway, he’s definitely my favor. Can’t wait for something new from him!
