Favorite Things Friday ~ Good Thrift Finds

I have a confession.  I went back to the thrift store to see if that Singer 503 was still there.  And just what was I going to do if it was?  Stare at it some more?  Try to find a good reason to justify me not buying it?  I wasn't sure, but like a criminal returning to the scene of the crime, I went.

And it was gone.  Whew!  No longer an option.  It had found a new home.  Good!

But since I was in the store, I may as well have a look around, right?

"Oh, look!"  I said to Norm in the dishes aisle.  "Aren't these cool?  Only 49 cents apiece."  I pushed aside the price sticker on the bottom of a cup to reveal the mark beneath.  "Well, will you look at that, Georges Briard."  No wonder I liked them.  His stuff has caught my eye (and Norm's) before.  This particular pattern is called Carousel.

When I got to the checkout, the clerk said there had been dinner plates as well, but someone else bought those earlier in the day.

I also found some fabric.  I get such a kick out of finding good fabric in the thrift store.  It's a different thrill than regular fabric store shopping.  Sort of like spotting a rare bird where you don't expect to see one.

The top four fabrics are batiks, about 3/4 yard each, except there's probably a couple yards of the purple.

So I'm joining Favourite Things Friday today, because good thrift finds are my favorite thing this week (and any week!).

And because my mp3 player shuffled up this song for me on my walk tonight, I'm sharing it as well.  I always want to stop what I'm doing and start dancing when I hear it.  Start the weekend early and sing the "Woo-hoo-hoo!" part out loud!

  4. Fun finds! I loved the thrift shops in TN and KY when I was over that way but now that I'm back in NoVA and DC, it's not so easy to find good finds nearby where I live. However, I think it's timing and taste, most of what is showing up in the stores now is a bit too modern for me.

Your plates/cups are so fun and it's awesome there was fabric there, too!

  5. I have also found some great stuff at thrift stores in the city area, but when we were in Florida, the stores were more expensive than Canada, so didn't buy anything, not that I saw much that I wanted either.
Love the cups, you truly did hit the jackpot with all the goodies.

  6. Woo-hoo-hoo! Can I skive off work and go thrifting? Those batiks are AMAZING! What a great find.

And I have to admit that when I saw your dishes, I was kinda "meh" about (please forgive me) "junk from the 70's." What's exciting about stuff from an era I didn't like the first time around? And, I like to have a complete set of whatever. With thrifting, you get what you get, and maybe you'll find some more, or if you're like me, you'll go on eBay and pay waayyy too much for missing pieces so you can have the set. It would have killed me to hear the clerk say that there were dinner plates that someone else got. Actually, it is killing me . . . I would love for you to have gotten the set. Anyway, when you mentioned that you'd found a famous designer's dishes for 49₵ apiece, I kind of liked them more. All of that is a little neurotic and OCD, I know. I'm rolling my eyes at myself.

All of that aside, I LOVE the dishes on that funky rainbow sunshine fabric. Do I see a mug rug in the future?

  7. It's obvious you do NOT shop at the same thrift stores I do.

You DEFINITELY do not shop at the thrift stores where I donate!

  8. Wow - that tableware looks great with that sun fabric. What about some placemats from it for when you use the cups and plates? I never find batiks at the thrift - lucky! Thanks for sharing.

  11. If I ever get to your neck of the woods I want to go thrift shopping with you. You find the BEST stuff!
I love the pattern on those cups and plates.

And I hear you on the finding good fabric for cheap – is there anything more thrilling?

I have that song on my Ipod too! I can’t help but bust out some big dance moves and sing out loud when it comes on.
