Acrylic Templates for Four-Lily Block Now Available

I've been working behind the scenes on something for a few weeks, and I'm excited to share the news with you today!

New custom acrylic templates for the Four-Lily Block are now available!

Longtime readers may recall seeing this block here on the blog, and the quilt made from it, throughout the past several years.  It’s based on a block in one of my grandmother’s quilts.

The pattern for the Thoroughly Modern Lily quilt is made using the Four-Lily Block.  The original quilt pattern included paper templates to be traced on cardboard and then onto your fabric to cut the pieces.

Recently, I revisited the pattern, wondering if acrylic templates for the Four-Lily Block might make cutting faster and easier (short answer: yes!).  Because, I know a guy...

So I consulted my favorite laser engraver (who happens to be my brother), Russ at DMP Engraving, and we collaborated to make these.  Aren’t they pretty?

More importantly, they work great!

Rotary cutting with these acrylic templates makes the job so smooth and easy, and accuracy is spot on.

Of course, you can also use them to trace and hand cut your fabric with scissors, if you prefer that method.

You have options!

You may notice there are two Piece C templates in the set.  One looks like a half Piece C (see below, right side).

If you are rotary cutting, the half-shaped Piece C, placed on the fold of fabric, allows you to easily cut the deep V-shape of the design with your rotary cutter.  If you prefer to hand cut, however, you can use the full-size Piece C template that comes in the set.  Both are included!

To go along with the template release, I’ve created an updated, condensed version of the Four-Lily Block Instructions, available as a free downloadable PDF.  For a more detailed tutorial, including tips for piecing curves and more, you can also find the original four-part series on the Tutorials tab at the top of the blog.

I'll be back in a few days with more on these templates, including cutting suggestions and helpful tips. (Edited:  The tips and suggestions post is now up, HERE.)  In the meantime, feel free to explore the links mentioned in this post, or the Four-Lily Block label from the sidebar.

  1. This is amazing! I remember this quilt and that it was based on one of your grandmother’s quilt. Beautiful! I am pinning this post, because this may very well be one of my next quilts. I love hand-piecing and this fits the bill. Kudos to your brother for making this possible.
