Sunday Sundry - Vol. 32

The Hands2Help charity quilt has made some headway this week.

I did take the seam ripper to those couple bass-ackwards blocks and put things  right.  Then I redistributed the final blocks so the plain red didn't scream "obvious" among the other red prints.

Sewed the top together on Friday night while listening to an interview on public radio with Wendy McClure, who has written a book entitled The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie.  I used to read Wendy's blog many years ago when she was chronicling her weight loss journey, before she wrote her first book, I'm Not the New Me.  So my ears perked up when I heard her name as the author being interviewed on the radio, and also because I've been a big fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books myself.  In fact, when my daughter was about 10, we spent the winter reading through all the Little House books together and then visited some of the places described in her books that summer.  That included Pepin, Wisconsin and Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where we saw an outdoor play based on the books right there on the banks of Plum Creek.  A year or two after that, on our way to visit my folks in Arkansas, we toured the Wilder home in Missouri.  Anyway, it was an interesting interview, and I'm definitely going to check out her book.  She has a witty and often irreverent style of writing, so I'm sure it'll be a fun read.

Back to the quilt, I put the backing together Saturday.  I admit, it's kind of a hodgepodge, and I had to do some weird creative piecing in an effort to get it the right size, but I think it'll be just fine once it's all quilted and bound.  That's what I'm telling myself, anyway.

I had to get batting at Jo-Ann today, so I thought I'd also see what the fuss was about with the Denyse Schmidt fabric that's been popping up like dandelions all over the quiltosphere.  Well, it was all gone at this store except for a little bit left on a couple skinny bolts that, had I not read the label, I would have completely passed by.  It had little flowers on a dusky blue background, nothing that particularly grabbed me, so I was happy to leave it behind.  Now, had they had the red/pink dots or the blue/green dots in that line, it may have been a different story (though I may have spared you the photos).
In any event, there was 50% off the clearance fabrics, so I snagged a few yards for the stash.  A couple batiks, a pink floral, and some cute blue birdies came home with me!

How about some music to wrap things up on the first Sunday Sundry post in many weeks?  I heard this artist this past week as I walked through the room where Norm was watching VH1.  Loved the throwback sound.  I thought the singer looked familiar, then recognized him from the early '90s group Tony Toni Tone' (Remember If I Had No Loot?).  This song is from Saadiq's 2008 album, "The Way I See It."  My blog name was derived from a twist on that phrase!

Beautiful quilt! I have to admit that although I love to go into fabric stores, quilting and sewing is not on the top of my list. My mother and sister are the quilters, but I do love a beautiful piece of fabric.

I always love to see what you are up to. Another beautiful quilt! I would never be able to get all those pieces lined up so perfectly.
Happy Sunday!

Yep- I like that red white and blue quilt more and more everytime I see it. Hodge Podge backs are very in right now.

Im going to come out and say it out loud...I dont know what the hoopla is about that new Denyse Schmidt line. But what do I know..I dont like Sherbet Pips either but Im in the minority it would appear. Love your blue birdies though.

I saved quarters to buy the Little House series in hardback when I was little. Since then, I've inherited several other Ingalls/Wilder books from my mom. A visit to the DeSmet, SD museum is on my list!
I do like the blue and green Denyse Schmidt prints at Joann's but didn't buy any. I like the blue birdies, too!
Your H2H quilt is looking very good! I'd better get busy...

Have a sweet Sunday!

Sorry you had to take the top apart .. but it does look lovely. I checked out Wendy McClure and put her book on my Amazon wish list. I read the books to my kids when they were little too -- at least most of them and we loved them. I had not read them when I was young so it was a real treat for me. I've never tried to go to any of the places in the book. Sounds like a summer road trip to me!

I have to confess, I only read have the post and missed the part about going to JoAnn's. Seems that I too have the attention span of a gnat.

Wow what a gorgeous red, white and blue quilt! Sounds like a wonderful cause too.

Had to laugh about your "weird" no, "creative" piecing.

Thanks for the music.

Hoping to get back blogging and blog-reading regularly.

Seeing your red, white, and blue quilt reminds me that I have a stack of rail fence blocks that I need to be putting together for a donation quilt. They are red, white, and blue to. Your quilt looks great!

I would have unpicked and redistributed too. Beautiful job. The back is really fun too.

I loved hearing about your Laura Ingalls Wilder connection. How cool that you got to visit some of her historical sites. Walnut Grove? Really! Awesome sauce!

Love the batiks you picked up at JoAnn's and the music was really fun this week.
